Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy

Policy on the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Scholarly Publishing

Jurnal Teknik supports the responsible and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in scientific research and scholarly publishing. The use of AI-assisted tools is permitted to enhance research efficiency, manuscript quality, data processing, and scientific development, provided that such use does not compromise originality, academic integrity, transparency, or author accountability.

This policy applies to all authors, reviewers, and editors involved in the publication process of Jurnal Teknik.

1. General Principles of AI Use

  1. AI technologies may be used as supporting tools in research and manuscript preparation but must not replace human intellectual contributions, critical analysis, or scholarly responsibility.

  2. AI tools must not be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of scholarly work.

  3. Authors remain fully responsible for all manuscript content, including materials generated, modified, or supported by AI technologies.

  4. Any substantive use of generative AI in manuscript preparation must be transparently disclosed.

  5. All AI-assisted activities must comply with research ethics, data protection requirements, copyright regulations, and internationally recognized standards of scholarly publishing.

2. Permitted Uses of AI

Jurnal Teknik permits the responsible use of AI technologies for the following purposes:

  1. Language Editing: Improving grammar, spelling, sentence structure, academic writing style, and manuscript readability.

  2. Writing Assistance: Supporting manuscript outlining, organization of ideas, and refinement of scientific presentation, provided that authors retain full intellectual responsibility.

  3. Programming and Software Development: Assisting with code development, debugging, algorithm optimization, and computational procedures relevant to the research.

  4. Data Analysis: Supporting data processing, classification, modeling, statistical analysis, and visualization, provided that the methods and results are scientifically valid and verifiable.

  5. Illustrations and Diagrams: Assisting in the creation of conceptual diagrams and supporting illustrations, provided that they are accurate, appropriately disclosed, and do not violate intellectual property rights.

  6. Literature Exploration: Assisting with the identification of relevant literature and research topics, provided that all references are independently verified using reliable and traceable scholarly sources.

The use of AI as an integral component of research methodologies, including machine learning, deep learning, intelligent systems, and AI-based engineering applications, is permitted. Such research must provide sufficient methodological details to ensure scientific evaluation, transparency, and reproducibility where applicable.

3. Prohibited Uses of AI

Jurnal Teknik strictly prohibits the following practices:

  1. Generating an entire scientific manuscript without meaningful intellectual contributions and substantive verification by the authors.

  2. Fabricating, falsifying, or manipulating research data, experimental results, or scientific findings.

  3. Generating fictitious references, citations, Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), or bibliographic sources that cannot be verified.

  4. Creating or manipulating images, graphs, or experimental documentation in ways that misrepresent actual research findings.

  5. Using AI technologies to facilitate plagiarism, data fabrication, falsification, or other forms of academic misconduct.

  6. Concealing the substantive use of generative AI in manuscript preparation.

  7. Uploading confidential information, personal data, or copyright-protected materials to AI platforms without appropriate authorization and adequate safeguards.

AI-generated synthetic data used for legitimate research purposes shall not be considered fabrication, provided that such data are clearly identified as synthetic, appropriately described in the methodology, and not misrepresented as real-world observations or experimental results.

4. AI Disclosure Statement

Authors who substantially use generative AI technologies during manuscript preparation must provide an explicit disclosure statement.

The disclosure must specify the name of the AI tool, its intended purpose, and the nature of its contribution to the manuscript.

The disclosure statement should appear in a separate section entitled "Declaration of AI Use", positioned before the References section.

Example of a declaration when AI has been used:

"During the preparation of this manuscript, the authors used [name of AI tool] to assist with [specific purpose]. All AI-assisted outputs were critically reviewed, verified, and revised by the authors. The authors take full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the manuscript."

Example of a declaration when generative AI has not been used:

"The authors declare that no generative AI technologies were used in preparing the substantive content of this manuscript."

The use of conventional tools limited to spelling, punctuation, and basic grammatical corrections does not require disclosure.

When AI technologies constitute part of the research methodology, authors must provide appropriate technical details in the Methods section, including the AI tool or model, version where relevant, purpose of use, procedures, and methods employed to validate the results.

5. AI Policy for Reviewers

Reviewers are required to maintain the confidentiality of all manuscripts received during the peer-review process.

  1. Reviewers must not upload unpublished manuscripts, or any part thereof, to external AI platforms without prior written authorization from the journal and adequate confidentiality safeguards.

  2. Reviewers must not delegate the scientific evaluation of manuscripts entirely to AI systems.

  3. AI tools may be used for general literature exploration or language editing of review reports, provided that no confidential manuscript information is disclosed.

  4. Any substantive use of AI in preparing peer-review reports must be disclosed to the handling editor.

  5. Reviewers remain fully responsible for the objectivity, accuracy, scientific validity, and quality of their evaluations.

6. AI Policy for Editors

Editors are responsible for ensuring that manuscript evaluation and editorial decision-making are conducted objectively, transparently, and in accordance with established principles of publication ethics.

  1. Editors may use appropriate technological tools to support preliminary manuscript screening, provided that data security and confidentiality are maintained.

  2. Editors must not upload confidential manuscripts to external AI platforms without appropriate authorization and adequate data protection safeguards.

  3. Decisions regarding manuscript acceptance, revision, or rejection must be based on the professional judgment of editors and reviewers rather than solely on AI-generated assessments.

  4. AI-generated content detection results must not be used as the sole basis for determining violations of publication ethics.

7. Violations and Editorial Actions

If potential misuse of AI technologies is identified, Jurnal Teknik reserves the right to investigate the matter and request clarification or supporting evidence from the authors.

Depending on the nature and severity of the violation, the journal may take the following editorial actions:

  1. Request clarification or correction of the AI disclosure statement.

  2. Require revisions to manuscript sections affected by inappropriate AI use.

  3. Reject manuscripts involving serious violations of research integrity or publication ethics.

  4. Issue corrections or retract published articles if serious ethical violations are identified after publication, in accordance with applicable publication ethics procedures.

All suspected violations will be evaluated fairly and proportionately, based on available evidence and with an opportunity for the authors to provide an explanation.

8. Policy Review and Updates

Jurnal Teknik is committed to periodically reviewing and updating this AI policy in response to technological developments, evolving standards of research integrity, and recommendations issued by relevant scholarly publishing organizations and academic publishers.

This policy is informed by internationally recognized principles of ethical scholarly publishing, including guidance from the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), and established academic publishers.
